The Curtain Spills

Never lazy, afternoon light plays with a curtain and our eyes...

The world must be coming to an end because New York Nitty-Gritty has been nominated for something--finalist for The 2006 Best of Blogs Awards - Best Hobby Blog
They don't have a photo category, so, what the heck, I'll take it. Be sure to go there and show your support (early and often!). Voting ends April 13th.

ENCHANTMENTS

St Marks Place, Manhattan

Yes, Sandy

doorway tags, Church Street

On Saturday, a faithful viewer asked a question: "Is there much graffiti in Manhattan?" The answer? Yes, Sandy, there is a lot of graffiti in Manhattan. I had your question in mind as I shot this specimen on Church Street in TriBeCa.

Intrepid Little Man

little man in the rain

Almost everywhere I go, I see him. The intrepid little man...He walks and he walks--and in any weather, too. Here, I saw him yesterday, on the West Side Highway close to Chelsea Piers. Rain? He scoffs. "Walk on, Little Man!", I yelled out. He barely noticed me as he pressed on his journey, more interested in the other little man going in the opposite direction.

I wish you well, little man. May you always carry on...

So Williamsburg

Composition with Orthodox Church

Here we have a Williamsburg, Brooklyn composition featuring part of the famous Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord. You may have seen it on the hit television show SEINFELD (in the episode where George pursues converting to the "Latvian Orthodox" religion for a woman).

Keen eyes will notice the absence of the familiar green patina. In the past year, workers repaired and cleaned the church's famous copper top.

Spring!

action figure, Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Spring has come and it's time to get up and dance. Or get on the trapeze. Or something... Just get out there!

This graffiti figure "performs" daily in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

For The Birds

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

Little Man and a Blessing

Little man and slush shuffle

The little man, as usual, shuffles above the slush--this time, right after the Saint Patrick's Day Parade on Fifth Avenue.

Saint Patrick's Day Parade-goers and slush

Having so much to do in NYC certainly blesses those who live or visit here. But having the spirit to "get out there" in spite of less than perfect weather blesses one, too. I salute all the people who braved the chill and the slush to march in and/or watch yesterday's parade. Erin Go Bragh!

Little Man Trilogy

Little man near Plaza Hotel with snow

As I slipped and slid in the slush and snow, I saw the little man near the Plaza.

Little man with parade prep and snow

Moving closer, I could see that the little man thinks about wearing the green as he walks near Saint Patrick's Day Parade barricades on 59th Street.

Taxi with broken bumper and snow

I nearly dropped the camera when I saw this taxi's bumper and the little man in the background fleeing the scene .

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

An extra shot for Friday...Here we see sunlight hitting the Hudson River and pier ruins at an incident angle to the camera (and a bit of lower Manhattan at the top).

Graffiti Portrait

Here's looking at you, kids, from Kenmare Street in Manhattan. Do they even need to lock this door? I call this a great security plan: urban camouflage!

Pier Ruins ESB

old NJ pier ruins with Empire State Building

Enjoying the great afternoon on the Jersey side of the Hudson River, I stopped to look at the ruins of an old pier and take advantage of the view of Manhattan. You see the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and more in the background.

Snow (Hey, Oh)

last remains of snow, with shadows and cigarette butts

By covering all the crud on the streets and sidewalks of the city, if only for a short time, snow (Hey, Oh) ranks as quite a blessing, well, unless too much falls at once but we haven't had that "worry" in some time.

last trace of snow with shadow and poo

Of course, some things appear when the snow (Hey, Oh) melts that one might rather not see. Sorry, kids!

stoop after most snow melted

Last but not least, here's a follow up to the STOOP photo from earlier this week. You can see only a tiny bit of snow (Hey, Oh) remaining in the shaded corners.

Looking Pays

clouds and sky with pipe and railing

I look up to see the sky and clouds. The illusion that the clouds come out of the pipe like smoke amuses me.

I look down to see footprints and cart tracks in the snow. Soon gone but fun while it lasted.

Only a bit of snow fell yesterday but left some interesting results. Here the snow has added itself to a graffiti design. Can you read the writing on the wall?

Negative Space

2Y233

On 44th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues...We refer to the space between objects as "negative space". Well, sometimes negative space can be a very positive thing.
