Blast From The Past

Times Square signage

Have you ever done this? When my camera says that its power has died, I open up the battery hatch, move the batteries around, and then take a few more shots. You can always get more shots.

Sometimes, if the camera is without batteries for a long time, it will forget what day it is. When I shoot photos in this condition, they show up as having been shot long ago. They get put in folders I sometimes forget to check. This happened yesterday.

In yesterday's case, I knew the date had changed to May 2, 2003 but couldn't be bothered at the moment to program the correct info. So, I knew later to expect the photos to show up in a folder with an old date. While looking for the "old" folder, I looked at some other "old" folders and came across some photos I shot in December 2005. This one from Manhattan (above) jumped out at me. If you compare it to the photo published here December 16th, 2005, you can see subtle differences, though the shots seem identical.

Enjoy!

East 12th Street

shadows on East 12th Street, Manhattan

She talks to birds she talks to angels she talks to trees she talks to bees
She don't talk to me talks to the rainbows and to the seas
She talks to the trees she don't talk to me don't talk to me

Fire Box

fire box, Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Another bent fire-related object in NYC; this time in Willamsburg, Brooklyn--what's up, can't keep it on the street, drivers?

Scribbles

Williamsburg scribbles

I suppose, if you owned the once-clean wall, graffiti could bum you out. Vandalism is vandalism. Of course, too, some vandalism looks better than other vandalism. ;]

Graffiti seems to go with the NYC territory, as seen here in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Perhaps it's a stretch to consider graffiti a blessing but we sure do have a lot of diversity in that regard.

What can you say? I only hope the hydrant gets fixed soon--just in case.

The Dudes

Scott with wood sculpture

Here's one from my trip to Alaska this July. Scott (right) always wanted to go when I was there and this year it finally happened.

We had 5 great days of camping. Nothing better than a camping trip with friends, I'd say. Well, maybe a road trip with camping--but that's another story.

Thanks, Scott. Let's do it again.

For Steven Giorgetti

black

street sign with stickers

Today, September 11th, brings with it a lot of noise--sloganeering, moralizing, and memorializing. Yes, we need to remember significant events but we should remember what happened without the politicking et cetera. Most important, in this case, we should remember the people lost.

One of the 2,996 who died in the attacks of September 11th, Steven Giorgetti didn't actually work at the World Trade Center but had a meeting there that fateful morning. (click photo for more)

Leaves leave the trees and, later, leave the sidewalk. Leaf me outta this.

Pied Beauty

FREAK, Coney Island

GLORY be to God for dappled things --
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.

Taxi Strike

new taxi

In spite of the taxi strike, an injured little man can still get a ride. No, a taxi did not strike the little man. Many drivers have gone on strike protesting new technology. Who knew the NYC taxi fleet had ostriches for drivers?

I think myself and the NYC cabbies are the last to have GPS in their vehicles AND taxis in other cities allow you to pay with a credit card. What gives? It makes me wonder what the REAL issues are.

Hanging Basket

shadow of hanging flower basket

You can feel the change of the season in the air these days, yet the good weather continues. Soon, the flower pots will disappear along with the flipflops. Well, like I say, the flower pots will soon disappear.

For Workers

Happy Labor Day! The sun has come back to NYC, so today should go that much better for "End-of-Summer" celebrations. I hope you enjoy the day, where ever you are.
